You couldn’t ask for a nicer location than where Tahoe City is found. Located on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, and just down the road from the Squaw Valley Ski Resort, Tahoe City is a hub for year-round outdoor recreation in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Additionally, Tahoe City is easy to reach, as it’s just fifteen miles from Interstate 80.

The downtown area of Tahoe City is a busy place, particularly on the summer weekends. Due to its close proximity to Interstate 80, Tahoe City is the most popular “entry point” into the Lake Tahoe Basin. As such, traffic can be heavy at times in and around the downtown area.

As Tahoe City is a tourist destination spot, Tahoe City is full of restaurants, shopping areas and lodging both in the downtown area and in the outskirts around town. Despite this, Tahoe City is still a small town, having a year-round population of less than 2000 people.

Tahoe City is also the starting point for the very popular float trip down the Truckee River between Tahoe City and Truckee, CA. On a busy (and warm) summer weekend, it’s common to see hundreds of float parties, using anything that float, making their way down this fun and scenic float.

Overall, anyone passing through Truckee on Interstate 80, and who has never visited the Lake Tahoe Basin, should make the short-side trip to Tahoe City since the views of Lake Tahoe from are superb. The Lake Tahoe Scenic Drive also passes through town, and Tahoe City is an excellent location to pick up this very scenic drive that loops around Lake Tahoe.
