The Lamoille Valley of Northeast Nevada

The Lamoille Valley of Northeast Nevada

The Lamoille Valley is located in Northeast Nevada, and sits to the west of the Ruby Mountain Range. It’s a very beautiful valley….at least if you like huge, sweeping valleys flanked by towering…usually snow-capped…peaks.

Unlike many valleys in Nevada, the Lamoille Valley isn’t out in the total middle of nowhere. Highway 227 connects the valley and the town of Lamoille to the nearby “city” of Elko. And due to the booming nature of Elko…significant building is occurring in the Lamoille Valley of new homes and such. Yet…if you head to the North or the South of Lamoille…essentially paralleling the Ruby Mountains…you’ll soon find yourself out in the middle of nowhere. Read the rest of this entry »

Overview Photo of Ely, Nevada

Overview Photo of Ely, Nevada

Ely is a great little town way out in the middle of nowhere of Eastern Nevada. Ely is, at least currently (late 2006), a boom town. The economy in Ely is heavily dependent on a mixture of the tourist trade, travelers and, above all, mining. With the explosion in commodity prices and the re-opening of a large mine out by Ruth…Ely right now has all the trappings of a boom town with exploding home prices and lack of housing in general. Western Pacific Railroad Engine Parked in Elko

Western Pacific Railroad Engine Parked in Elko

his is the second gallery of photographs that showcase various spots in Elko, NV. Elko is located in Northeast Nevada, right on Interstate 80. Due to the mining boom going on, along with the ever blossoming “travelers rest” businesses…the town of Elko, at least when I visited it in 2006, is thriving.

You can view more photos of Elko by visiting the first gallery of Elko photos, too. Read the rest of this entry »

The Courthouse in Elko

The Courthouse in Elko

Elko is a interesting city. Currently, due to the soaring price of gold and silver the past few years, Elko has all the qualities of a boom town. Housing is difficult to find and the inner-core of Elko, especially on a Friday and Saturday night, bustles with activity as the miners and ranchers from outside of town descend into Elko for a few nights out. Historic Wells on Front Street

Historic Wells on Front Street

Wells, Nevada is an interesting town. Located on Interstate 80 in Northeast Nevada, Wells to most people will basically resemble a giant truck stop. Two Flying J Travel Plaza’s are located there. Why lonely and isolated Wells needs TWO Flying J Travel Plazas…one on each side of the Interstate…I do not know. But it is there. A few hotels are also located in Wells, too. Lone Red Flower in the Steptoe Valley

The Steptoe Valley is a gorgeous valley that many travelers through Nevada sort of see. They may not see the true beauty of the valley itself, but since Highway 93 cuts right through the valley…many people do at least get a glimpse of it.

The Steptoe Valley is VERY long…extending from about 30 miles South of Ely for about 50 miles to the North of Ely…thus being somewhere in the vicinity of 80 miles in length. The width of the Valley varies from about 5 miles all the way up to 30 miles…depending on where you are. Read the rest of this entry »

Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park

Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park

Great Basin National Park is a beautiful park located in a very remote area of eastern Nevada, with the main entrance to the park being Baker. Great Basin National Park contains the USA’s southern-most glacier and as well as some of the tallest peaks in Nevada…with Wheeler Peak being the tallest peak with an elevation of 13,060 feet. Unlike most National Parks, Great Basin as of this date does not charge a entry-fee…probably because no one goes here. Read the rest of this entry »

Photos of the Fish Lake Valley in Nevada

The White Mountains & Agricultural Fields in the Fish Lake Valley

The White Mountains & Agricultural Fields in the Fish Lake Valley

The Fish Lake Valley is a beautiful valley surrounded by towering mountians, particularly on the western side. The White Mountains provide a scenic backdrop to this remote and secluded valley. These mountains also contain Nevada highest mountain peak, Boundary Peak at 13,145 feet.

The Fish Lake Valley is seldom visited by people. Only one state highway, Highway 264, goes through the valley…and that highway doesn’t really lead anywhere. In short, if someone wants to visit the Fish Lake Valley, they sort of need to go out of their way to see it…as the odds of “simply passing through it” are slim indeed. Read the rest of this entry »
