About Elko, Nevada

Elko is a interesting city. Currently, due to the soaring price of gold and silver the past few years, Elko has all the qualities of a boom town. Housing is difficult to find and the inner-core of Elko, especially on a Friday and Saturday night, bustles with activity as the miners and ranchers from outside of town descend into Elko for a few nights out.

Elko is located in Northeast Nevada and is the first major “town” that one comes across when driving down Interstate 80 out of Utah. Truthfully, it’s the ONLY major town one finds in-between Salt Lake City and Reno on Interstate 80. As such, Elko also plays host to many travelers…which shows up in the towns voluminous hotel capacity…there are hotels and motels everywhere in Elko (some chains, some nice private ones, and some dumps).

Elko, at least to me, has a rather nice location…although few people will see it if they only stay on Interstate 80. Just to the south of Elko lie the beautiful and rugged Ruby Mountains and the scenic Lamoille Canyon.
