About Caliente, Nevada

I really like Caliente. And judging by a “touch” of new building going on in the town, other people must feel the same way too. Caliente is located on Highway 93, about 90 or so miles Northeast of Las Vegas. Due to it’s location on Highway 93…one of the busier highways in Nevada…Caliente gets a fair amount of traffic passing through it. As such, Caliente has “most of the basic services” that are needed for travelers passing through. Still, don’t look for huge casinos or many huge hotel chains…as there are none. Likewise, shopping is quite limited.

One thing about Caliente is that it has a rather nice downtown area. It certainly won’t dazzle someone from a town back in the Midwest or out East…but by Nevada standards…Caliente is quite nice. In particular, I really like the old train station in town. The Union Pacific Railroad…which is VERY busy…runs right through the heart of the downtown area. Until the Amtrak pulled the plug on passenger service many years ago, Caliente’s railroad station was a beautiful and functioning train station. Today though…it pretty much serves as a mixture of town offices and a tiny public library. Still, the station has been nicely restored and is quite pretty to look at.

I also enjoy the location of Caliente. The town has a higher elevation than Las Vegas…with summer highs rarely hitting 100 degrees. And while Caliente is located way down in the bottom of a canyon, numerous forested hills and small mountains surround the town essentially. Finally, the canyon area south of town…on Highway 317…is a must-see trip, as a drive through the canyon that is full of Red Rock is quite enjoyable if somewhat bumpy.
