About Laughlin, Nevada and this Gallery

Laughlin, Nevada…in many ways…reminds me of the way Las Vegas used to be. Once upon a time, Las Vegas was full of neon-lights, cheap eats and cheap rooms. Today…those types of hotels in Las Vegas are sort of a rare breed, existing mainly well away from the Strip or to some degree up on Fremont Street.

Yet, Laughlin picks up where Las Vegas left off. The last time I stayed in Laughlin, I picked up a room at the Flamingo Hotel and Resort (now called the Aquarius), for $19 a night! Hard to beat that. The room was great, wonderful view and the casino was pretty nice too.

Laughlin, Nevada is located right on the Colorado River, towards the very southern tip of the state. Across the Colorado River from Laughlin is Bullhead City, AZ…a booming retiree mecca.

I like the location of Laughlin. It’s a pretty quick trip to see some awfully nice things over in Arizona. And, just up the road from Laughlin is the very scenic drive up and over Christmas Tree Pass, a dirt road that cuts over the Newberry Mountains.

Now, Laughlin won’t be competing with Las Vegas anytime soon. Laughlin tends to attract a totally different crowd than Las Vegas does now…hence the cheap prices, less-grandiose restaurants and hotels, and the very visible selection of penny and nickel slots machines (in the top tier resorts in Las Vegas…good luck finding the penny and nickel slots!)
