About the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas

The Stratosphere is a mixture of hotel, casino, a small shopping complext and 1000 foot high amusement park. The location of the Stratosphere is a bit mixed. I really don’t like the far northern end of the Las Vegas Strip, which is where the Stratosphere is located. However, that location leads to one VERY nice thing…cheap rooms.

Most of the Stratosphere is just your ordinary but nice and clean hotel and casino. However, what sets the Stratosphere apart from everyelse in town is the Tower of the Stratosphere. The tower of the Stratosphere is not only the tallest building in Las Vegas, but is actually the second tallest building west of the Rocky Mountains…which I find rather interesting. The Tower of the Stratosphere has an elevation of 1,149 feet…making for very fine views indeed.

Additionally, several “rides” are located on the top of the Stratosphere’s Tower…giving new meaning to the term high-elevation amusement park. The rides, at the time of this writing, are called Big Shot, Insantiy the Ride, XSCREAM and the High Roller.

Photography from the top of the Stratosphere Tower, at least at night, is not fun. It’s not because the views aren’t good…far from it. The views are fantastic. Instead, the problem is that they don’t allow you to take a tripod up. Why…I have no earthly idea. And I only discovered this fact after waiting in a long line, paying for my ticket, then being turned away. So I took my tripod back to my room, had to buy yet another ticket, and finally got up to the top of the deck.

The view is worth all the hassle you have to go through to get to the top of the tower…although I was NOT pleased that I had to buy a second ticket at $15 a pop. Anyways…story for another day.
