Overview Photo of Ely, Nevada

Ely is a great little town way out in the middle of nowhere of Eastern Nevada. Ely is, at least currently (late 2006), a boom town. The economy in Ely is heavily dependent on a mixture of the tourist trade, travelers and, above all, mining. With the explosion in commodity prices and the re-opening of a large mine out by Ruth…Ely right now has all the trappings of a boom town with exploding home prices and lack of housing in general. Western Pacific Railroad Engine Parked in Elko

his is the second gallery of photographs that showcase various spots in Elko, NV. Elko is located in Northeast Nevada, right on Interstate 80. Due to the mining boom going on, along with the ever blossoming “travelers rest” businesses…the town of Elko, at least when I visited it in 2006, is thriving.

You can view more photos of Elko by visiting the first gallery of Elko photos, too. (more…)

The Courthouse in Elko

The Courthouse in Elko

Elko is a interesting city. Currently, due to the soaring price of gold and silver the past few years, Elko has all the qualities of a boom town. Housing is difficult to find and the inner-core of Elko, especially on a Friday and Saturday night, bustles with activity as the miners and ranchers from outside of town descend into Elko for a few nights out. Historic Wells on Front Street

Historic Wells on Front Street

Wells, Nevada is an interesting town. Located on Interstate 80 in Northeast Nevada, Wells to most people will basically resemble a giant truck stop. Two Flying J Travel Plaza’s are located there. Why lonely and isolated Wells needs TWO Flying J Travel Plazas…one on each side of the Interstate…I do not know. But it is there. A few hotels are also located in Wells, too. (more…)

The Eureka Courthouse in Eureka, Nevada

The Courthouse in Eureka, Nevada

Eureka is a lonely town located in Central Nevada on Highway 50. Once upon a time, Eureka was a thriving boom town due to extensive mining activity located just outside of town. And today…while a mine is still in operation…other mines have closed down, at least for now. As such, there are many empty and abandoned buildings in Eureka…and I personally found the downtown area of Eureka to be rather quiet…even on a Friday night. (more…)

Caliente's Railroad Depot at Night

I really like Caliente. And judging by a “touch” of new building going on in the town, other people must feel the same way too. Caliente is located on Highway 93, about 90 or so miles Northeast of Las Vegas. Due to it’s location on Highway 93…one of the busier highways in Nevada…Caliente gets a fair amount of traffic passing through it. As such, Caliente has “most of the basic services” that are needed for travelers passing through. Still, don’t look for huge casinos or many huge hotel chains…as there are none. Likewise, shopping is quite limited. (more…)

Purple Flowers in Boulder City

Boulder City is a great little town…although I guess little isn’t the best way to describe it anymore. Boulder City is located just a scant 25 miles away from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas. Boulder City was really put on the map during the construction of Hoover Dam, which is located way down in Boulder Canyon. Because of this history with Hoover Dam, Boulder City has all sorts of memorabilia around town signifying the importance of the dam in the towns history. (more…)

Dusk Over the Riverside Hotel & Casino in Laughlin

Laughlin, Nevada is located in the very southern tip of the state…about 90 miles to the south of Las Vegas on Highway 95. Laughlin is rather similar to the way “Las Vegas Used To Be,” with cheap rooms, visible penny slots, cheap eats and gaudy neon lights. Because of this, Laughlin has become very popular with people seeking out entertainment that only hotels and casinos can provide…but at affordable prices. (more…)
