About Exploring Nevada

Exploring Nevada.Com was started because, quite simply, there is no good website about Nevada around. For better or for worse, Nevada has a reputation as being an “ugly” state with little more than dusty casinos, mean rattlesnakes, loose women and endless desert.

It’s my hope that this site shatters that reputation. Now, I won’t argue that Nevada doesn’t have lots of desert, loose women, dusty casinos and some mean rattlers. However, Nevada has far, far more than just that. Hopefully, once you’ve read the informaton on this site and browsed through the massive photo gallery, a visitor should walk away with a much better understanding of this unexplored and sadly misunderstood state.

Birth of Exploring Nevada.Com

I registered this domain name about 2 months before moving to Nevada in late 2005. I was rather surprised it was still available.

I built this site using the tried and true techniques of a previous site I’ve built, Big Sky Fishing.Com, while avoiding the pitfalls that make administering that site a nightmare. By and large, the feedback about Big Sky Fishing.Com has been nothing but positive, so I followed the same content/navigational system laid out in that site and have applied it to this one.

I first began work on this site in March 2006, on a photo journey to Laughlin. The next big photo gathering work began on May 12th, when I left on a 40 day and 40 night road trip through out central and southern Nevada. It was an awesome trip - and being gone for 40 days was an experience in and of itself - although my cat wasn’t thrilled with it! Many of the photos on this site came from this trip - a trip where I took over 15,000 photos and ended up with over 2,000 that were usable for website use.

Beginning in July, I began work on the site structure, the databases and the content of the site itself. It’s my hope to have most of the site flushed out by late fall 2006, but that might be a bit ambitious!

Exploring Nevada.Com is a Blog, PhotoBlog and Content Site

What that means is that this site basically touches upon everything and anything Nevada…and usually does it in a quirky and sometimes weird way too. You’ll find everything from where to hike up in Tahoe to restaurants I love and hate, hotels I like and hotels I hate, as well as detailed descriptions about the 1000’s of photographs that are on this site.

I’ve taken great pains to make this site easy to navigate - something that many content sites sort of forget about.

While advertising is run, it is kept to a minimum and has been designed to be unobtrusive. I’ve also set up the advertising so that it hopefully is somewhat interesting - matching the content of the page you are viewing and hopefully your interests.
