Photos of the Charleston Mountains
March 29th, 2009Yes, Las Vegas is in a desert. But, for those who like mountains, take heart, they are quite close. In fact, the mountains are closer than most people think. The mountains that are so close to Las Vegas are called the Charleston Mountains, whose peaks rise to above 10,000 feet (Las Vegas has an elevation of around 2000 feet).
Due to their lofty height and excellent access on both a number of paved and dirt roads, the Charleston Mountains are a wonderful way to escape the desert heat during the summer. Additionally, the Charleston Mountains have scores of hiking trails, a small wilderness area and, for the winter enthuasist, a small ski area (yes, these mountains can get a fair amount of snow during the winter…with the highest peaks getting around 180 inches of snow a year).
