PhotoBlog : Stokes Castle at Sunset in Austin, NevadaStokes Castle is a historic “castle” that is located in the highly remote town of Austin, Nevada. There is quite the lengthy history to this castle which I’ll elaborate on in a future post about Austin. But for now…just accept the fact that there is a beautiful and very old rock castle here. The castle itself sits just on the “outskirts” of Austin…on a dirt road about 1/4 of a mile from downtown. A small parking area is also available. The castle has a absolutely drop dead gorgeous view of the sprawling Reese River Valley below, as well as wonderful views of the distant Desatoya Mountains and the Shoshone Mountains. I spent the better part of three hours at this spot. I showed up at about 5pm…soon after the rain cleared off. The rest of downtown Austin, what little there is of it, was closed. But it slowly began to clear up, so I just sat around, took a few daytime photos, and took in the view. But as sunset approached…I got lucky. The clouds thinned out enough to get some wonderful colors. While I didn’t get many “top pictures,” I was none-the-less pleased with the results. Little Austin is not destined to become a tourist destination anytime soon. But…should you happen to be going down Highway 50…aka the Loneliest Highway in American…you owe it to yourself to take the short detour up to the castle.
