PhotoBlog : RIP Stardust Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas

PhotoBlog : RIP Stardust Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas

This photograph is certainly nothing outstanding. Indeed…it isn’t even that good. But it is all I have of the now laid to rest Stardust Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas. You see, at 2:30am on March 14th, 2007, the Stardust was brought down in the party-fashion way Las Vegas always seems to destroy it’s old casinos.

The Stardust was, once upon a time, considered the elite casino in Las Vegas. But, it fell behind other casinos on the Las Vegas Strip. And it’s location, exiled on the northern part of the strip, did not help it’s cause either. Either way, a unique part of the history of Las Vegas was brought down, to be replaced by a 5,300room mixed-use Hotel, Casino and Condo Complex called the Echelon.

The Echelon is a project of Boyd Gaming. The whole project, assuming all is built and stays within budget, will run about $4 Billion…not cheap, even by standards in Las Vegas today.

What makes me sad a bit about the dynamiting of the Stardust is that yet another older, and affordable, hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip has now bitten the dust. Yes, all the new casinos and resorts that are popping up on the strip are beautiful…inside and out. But…they are far from affordable, at least for bums like me. And now with the Sahara being sold, I’ve begun to wonder if someone like me…on a limited budget…will ever be able to stay on the Las Vegas Strip again.

Of course, there is always Fremont Street. You can’t get much lower in price than the Golden Gate Casino…but believe me…you do get what you pay for.
