Where to Start?

Photoblog : A Seat With a View in Great Basin National Park

Photoblog : A Seat With a View in Great Basin National Park

There is nothing “special” about this photograph, I’ll be the first to admit. No dazzling colors. No dazzling rays of light. Yet, call me odd, I still like it. Perhaps because the photo was taken in one of my favorite National Parks…Great Basin National Park which is in Central Nevada.

Perhaps because I have no life I spent an hour of it sitting on this very bench, just taking in the beautiful view one gets. In the event you are wondering where in the world this is, it is in Great Basin National Park, at a little turn-off from the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive. You get a spectacular view of Wheeler Peak and the other high peaks in Great Basin National Park.

On this particular day, like many days in Nevada in mid-Spring, the day started off nice and sunny. But by 10am the clouds began to build in, and by noon it was raining (well, sort of) down in the valley below with light snow up in the higher elevations of Great Basin.

One thing I love about Great Basin National Park are the dramatic elevation changes…from 4000 vertical feet down in Baker, Nevada…the main town and the entry point to the park, to 13,000 feet up on the summit of Wheeler Peak. The road itself that leads to the high country, called Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, winds its way up to over 10,000 feet, ending at the Wheeler Peak Campground, which was closed when I was there last time due to having six feet of snow on the ground.

All in all, Great Basin National Park is a very special place in Nevada that few people ever vist…and most probably don’t even know it simply exists. Yet here it is.
